The materials of traditional New England
Most things written about building materials are vague on purpose. "Natural stone." "Quality copper." "Traditional finish." The vagueness is not an accident — it is what lets an article apply to everything and commit to nothing. The Standard is the opposite. It is a refusal to leave the room until the material has a name, a grade, a thickness, and a reason.
A specification is not a suggestion. "Sixteen-ounce copper" is a different material from "twenty-ounce copper," and a roof built from the wrong one fails in a way that a roof built from the right one does not, twenty years from now, when no one remembers which article they read. The Standard exists because that distinction is usually the first thing cut from anything written for a general audience — and it is the only part that matters when you are actually building something.
Every entry in the archive ends with a Standard: a short, declarative paragraph naming exactly what to ask for. Not a brand. Not an affiliate link. The material itself, specified the way an architect would specify it on a real set of drawings, because that is exactly what it is.

River-washed pea gravel, 3/8" grade. Native New England origin. Color range: warm grey, buff, pale rose. Installed over compacted crusher run base at 2 to 3 inches depth. Edged in Belgian block or granite cobble.

Through-stones at maximum 4-foot spacing horizontally, every other course vertically. One-inch batter per foot of height on each face. Flat capstone course, minimum 6-inch thickness. No mortar. This is the correct wall for New England.

For pre-1900 soft brick: natural hydraulic lime mortar or lime putty mortar. For post-1900 brick: Type N Portland-lime mortar at most. For granite and harder stone: Type N or Type S, depending on exposure. Sand color and texture must match the original. This is the specification that protects the masonry rather than the mortar.
